The Home of Sustainable Arctic Char
At Cold Lake, we are dedicated to advancing sustainable aquaculture practices and using the latest technology to produce healthy, tasty, and environmentally friendly Arctic Char in northern Sweden. Our fish is expected to be on the market by 2025, and we are excited to share this delicacy with consumers.
Creating the Perfect Environment for our Arctic Char
Few people have had the opportunity to taste this beautiful and extremely tasty fish, but that is about to change. Using state-of-the-art RAS technology, we are able to create the perfect environment for the Arctic Char to thrive. RAS technology enables us to produce fish in a sustainable, safe, controlled, and traceable way, ensuring that our seafood is fresh and natural.
High Density Growth and High Efficiency
One of the key benefits of RAS technology is its ability to support high-density growth. This is perfect for the Arctic Char, which thrives in these conditions and is able to grow to its full potential in a controlled environment. At Cold Lake, our land-based facility provides the ideal temperature and environment for the char to thrive, allowing us to produce a high volume of healthy and sustainable fish. The high-density growth enabled by RAS technology not only allows us to produce more fish, but it also reduces our environmental impact by using fewer resources and reducing waste. This makes RAS technology an essential part of our commitment to sustainable aquaculture.
Comparing to Other Protein Sources
Another benefit of RAS technology is the high efficiency of the Arctic Char. As an omnivore, the char has a very good ability to convert fish feed into finished fish. In fact, it takes just 0.8 kg of fish feed to produce 1 kg of finished fish, making it one of the most efficient protein sources available. This efficiency is further enhanced by the high protein retention of the char, which is 31%, similar to that of a cow. In comparison:
- Chickens have a protein retention of 21%
- Pigs have a protein retention of 18%
Additionally, the edible meat per 100 kg feed for a char is 61 kg, significantly higher than chicken, pigs, and cows.
- Chickens produce 21 kg of edible meat per 100 kg of feed
- Pigs produce 17 kg of edible meat per 100 kg of feed
- Cows produce between 4 - 10 kg of edible meat per 100 kg of feed
This makes the char a highly efficient and sustainable protein source that is perfect for a controlled and sustainable aquaculture environment.
RAS Technology Allows for Antibiotic-Free Aquaculture
Another key advantage of using RAS technology is that it allows us to grow our fish without the need for antibiotics. In our controlled environment, the fish are able to thrive without the need for medication, making our seafood even healthier and more natural.
Nutrient-Rich and Delicious
In addition to being sustainably-sourced and produced, the Arctic Char is also bursting with health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, providing numerous health benefits such as supporting heart health, reducing inflammation, and improving brain function. The char also has a firm, flakey flesh with delicate, edible skin, making it an incredibly tasty and versatile fish that is perfect for any seafood lover. Whether it is grilled, baked, or fried, the Arctic Char is sure to impress with its delicious flavor and healthy goodness. So if you are looking for a tasty and healthy seafood option, look no further than Cold Lake Arctic Char.
